Hero dies trying to save mum from Sydney fire

A man has been remembered as the “epitome of kindness” after tragically passing away in a house fire.

A man has died after a final heroic act trying to save his mother as flames enveloped their family home in Blacktown, Sydney.

Ray Barroga tragically died at the scene after being pulled from the blaze and being treated by paramedics.

The man in his 60s initially made it out of the fire before returning inside to save his mother, neighbours told 9 News.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews were on the scene in minutes and rushed to save the pair from the fire.

The roof of the property collapsed as crews pulled the two occupants from the flames.

His mother, aged in her 80s, was rushed to Westmead Hospital in critical condition.

Friends have shared tributes to Mr Barroga online after his passing.

Mr Barroga has been remembered as a “very kind person” by friends and family, with some saying they were ”devastated” to learn of his death.

The blaze began at around 5am on October 17, with the huge flames drawing the attention of those nearby who tried to help.

He has been remembered for his kindness.

Neighbours used hoses and fire extinguishers to attempt to douse the blaze, however, it wasn‘t enough against the wall of flames.

“Very confronting conditions for all of the emergency services and the neighbours,” FRNSW Superintendent Michael Morris said.

It took firefighters almost two hours to extinguish the fierce blaze.

The Fire Investigation and Research Unit are now assisting NSW Police in investigating how the fire started.

“An initial inspection of the scene has found no evidence of smoke alarms,” Fire and Rescue NSW said.

The fire was contained to the room it started in, but the rest of the house sustained severe smoke and water damage.
