A collection of tents on an oval in northern NSW has helped convey the full extent of the flood crisis devastating the region.

The image, taken by NSW Rural Fire Service on the outskirts of Lismore, shows more than two dozen white tents erected.

Each set up is intended to host showers and toilets, food service areas and first aid in an attempt to help those providing flood relief.

The fire service said the facilities’ ability to host emergency service workers also ensured local accommodation not impacted by the floods can be used by displaced residents.

Lismore, 45km southwest of Byron Bay, is among the towns worst impacted by the NSW floods, with Fire and Rescue commissioner Paul Barker calling the situation “almost biblical”.

Rain has caused the city’s worst flood on record and residents are faced with millions of dollars worth of damage to homes and properties.

Supply shortages are hampering the clean-up effort.

More than 2000 properties in the region have been declared unliveable and two out of three flood-affected homes in the town will have to be demolished and rebuilt.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet responded to critics while visiting devastated Lismore in the on Monday morning.

“Some of those areas will look back at this and say it could have been done better but we are where we are right now and we’re doing absolutely everything we can to provide care and support for those who need it to get those essential supplies in,” he told Nine’s Today.

“There are logistic difficulties with all of this but it is all hands on deck to get the clean up done, to get supplies in and that’s happening right now.”
