Gymea Bay: Woman and dog rescued from terrifying house fire that spread to bushland

A woman and her dog were rescued and an investigation is under way after a house went up in flames in Sydney’s south overnight.

Rescue of trapped animals 'got the right people to do the right thing'

A woman and her dog are lucky to be alive after their house went up in flames before the inferno quickly spread to nearby bushland.

Emergency services, including more than 20 firefighters, found the home “well alight” when they were called to Valley Way in Gymea Bay just after 4am on Wednesday.

A 57-year-old woman and her dog had evacuated the property.

She was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation before being taken to Sutherland Hospital for observation.

Residents at neighbouring properties were also forced to evacuate as a precaution, police said, as fire crews worked for two hours to extinguish the blaze, which caused the roof, floors and walls to collapse.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Scott Dodson said it was a timely reminder for residents to remain vigilant and ensure they have a fire escape plan.

“Now is just as good a time as any for residents to check they have a working smoke alarm and that all members of the family have an awareness of calling triple-0 in an emergency” he said.

Officers from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command established a crime scene and investigations are ongoing.
