A major search has been launched after a bag containing fishing gear was found on rocks at a secluded beach.

A passer-by found the bag at Dudley Beach in Newcastle about 7.20am on Thursday, but nobody was around so they contacted police.

Lake Macquarie Police District officers attended the scene and found the grey bag at the southern end of the beach, near the Bombala Street track and Cross Creek.

Police searched the area with help from the Marine Area Command, Marine Rescue, Polair and NSW Surf Lifesavers, but they were unable to locate anyone.

“While the items may have been discarded or lost, police hold concerns for the welfare of the potential owner and are appealing for anyone who has information on the owner of the items to contact local police,” a police spokesperson said.

Anyone with information about the items is urged to contact Lake Macquarie Police or Crime Stoppers.
