A fisherman has been rescued after plunging 15 metres down a cliff at Evans Head on the far north coast of NSW.

Emergency services were called about 5.30pm on Saturday after reports the 60-year-old man had fallen from a cliff at the Razorback Lookout.

The man was understood to have fallen while gaining access to rocks below, the Rescue Helicopter Services said.

Paramedics attended the scene and a medical team was winched in by rescue helicopter to treat him.

He suffered suspected spinal injuries, multiple fractures and a head injury.

Once stabilised, he was winched via a stretcher from the cliff and flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane in a serious but stable condition.
