Firefighter injured while tackling 20m tall service station blaze as investigations kick off
Hazmat teams are on-site at the Sydney service station engulfed in flames on Friday night, working to retrieve fuel after more than 60 firefighters brought the inferno under control.
Firefighters believe a massive blaze that engulfed a petrol station, fuel tanker and cars overnight was caused by a small spark before more than 60 firefighters had to bring it under control.
It took firefighters five hours to extinguish the blaze which was able to be contained to the fuel station but brought down its main building and forecourt canopy.
Residents reportedly felt their homes shake with the force of the explosion as Westside Petroleum on Lindesay St at Campbelltown was swallowed in flames about 10pm Friday.
No one was injured when the inferno engulfed the tanker and cars, but the service station was completely gutted on Saturday morning.
Fire and Rescue NSW investigators are now working to determine the cause of the fire, with crews remaining on scene to dampen hotspots.
It is believed a small spark created the flame, which burned for three minutes before causing the massive explosion.
Community member Geoff Hagarty was reportedly returning to his vehicle nearby after filming the blaze when the ground was rocked by the eruption.
“Just as we were getting back in the car, something exploded, shook the ground beneath our feet, then I couldn’t get out of there quicker then what I did,” he posted to Facebook early on Saturday morning.
Staff at the service station immediately alerted fire emergency services to the blaze when it first began around 10.15pm.
Fire and Rescue NSW said “more than 60 FRNSW firefighters and 16 fire trucks” were called in to the fourth Alarm fire, with early reports suggesting the building had at least “partially collapsed”.
At the height of the fire flames were believed to be more than 20m tall, according to FRNSW.
“A petrol tanker, three cars and several LPG cylinders (were) also engulfed in flames,” FRNSW said in a statement on Friday.
After “smoke (had) also been issuing from a nearby liquor store” Emergency services confirmed on Saturday morning that the shop had sustained minor heat damage.
A nearby liquor store and a home sustained minor heat damage, while two more homes nearby were spared.
While about a dozen people had to be evacuated and streets closed there were no reported injuries, except for one firefighter who suffered a minor injury and was treated by paramedics on-scene.
“At the moment the fire is out but firefighters remain on scene to conduct investigations,” a FRNSW spokesperson said.
“The cause of the fire is still under investigation, so police and fire brigades will remain on scene for some time conducting investigations.”
The fire was contained around 1:30am and extinguished by 3:15am.
Several FRNSW crews have remained on-scene, damping down hot spots and dousing small reignitions, while hazmat specialists have been called in to decontaminate the site.
While specialists assist with the recovery of fuel at the scene and work to contain the run-off from firefighting foam, Fire Investigation and Research Unit personnel are on-site to investigate the cause of the fire.
