High-voltage power lines have trapped Sydney residents after a ferocious lightning storm wreaked havoc in their neighbourhood overnight.
Ferocious lightning storms have caused high-voltage power lines to go down on people’s homes, living them trapped inside.
About 500m of cabling fell across several streets in Sydney’s west overnight, with emergency services urging people affected not to leave their homes from 7am.
Houses in Plumpton - on Aquilina Drive, Beverly Place, Tilden Place, Polonia Avenue, Carroll Crescent and other roads - are in the danger zone as authorities work to get the area safe, with lines hanging across their properties.
NSW Police said they were working to rectify the situation as soon as possible.
Fire and Rescue NSW crews were initially called out to a fire in the roof of a house in Plumpton, sparked from the power lines coming down.
Acting Superintendent Bruce Fitzpatrick said firefighters and police would remain on scene to provide updates to residents “until the threat is neutralised”.
Endeavour Energy said overnight lightning storms had caused 10,000 homes to lose power overnight.
Meanwhile, motorists are being told to be careful driving along the M7 at Rooty Hill and Glendenning due to low-hanging wires.
All lanes are open but the speed limit has been reduced to 40km/h.
