Emergency response under way after chaotic scenes at NSW Police offices
Chaotic scenes have unfolded after a man reportedly tried to reach the office of the NSW Police Commissioner.
A man has prompted a major police response after reportedly trying to get to the office of NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb.
A major emergency response rushed to the NSW Police headquarters on Elizabeth St in Sydney shortly after 1pm.
Multiple police units were at the scene, as well as an ambulance with a stretcher and the riot squad.
Inspector Wayne Ashworth said the 34-year-old man did not have a weapon and was spotted wondering vacant office space before the alarm was raised.
“All we had at the time was a male on the 21st floor, a lot of floors of this building are empty,” Inspector Ashworth told reporters.
“He was seen by people on the 21st floor, it's a 38 storey building, so obviously that’s what raised our concern.
“We had a male at the building with unusual behaviour.”
The building, located on Elizabeth St, was roped off, with dozens of police on the scene.
Officers also stood guard at the building’s entrance.
The situation wrapping up about 2.45pm.
Nine News said the man was trying to reach the offices of the Commissioner to try to sell an app.
In a statement to NCA NewsWire while the operation was unfolding, police said there was “no apparent risk” to the public.
The man was later found in Surry Hills and arrested by police.
He was taken to Day Street Police Station and released without charge despite earlier suggestions by Mr Ashworth that he could be charged with trespass related offences.
NSW Police said no further police action was expected.
