An elderly couple has been rushed to hospital after their car crashed through a barrier and fell onto a Sydney beach about 10m below.
Emergency crews were called to Maroubra in the city’s east just after 2.30pm when a vehicle travelling along Marine Parade went through a metal fence.
It landed on the sand below, trapping the male driver, aged in his 70s, for a short period.
A female occupant, also in her 70s, was found in the back of the car and paramedics believe she could have been “somehow ejected from the front seat”.
Both were flown by a rescue helicopter to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition, the man suffering chest, head and lower limb injuries and the woman with spinal and chest injuries.
The pair have been placed in induced comas and are in a critical condition. No one else was injured in the incident.
Maroubra’s sands are typically filled with people, but being a rainy day in Sydney, the beach was relatively quiet.
Authorities say it’s unclear how the incident occurred and investigations are continuing.
