Dominic Perrottet will review plans to reopen the state on Monday
NSW’s new premier will review the state’s reopening plan today, telling reporters there were ‘a number of issues’ with the current roadmap.
Newly minted NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet will make reviewing the state’s reopening roadmap his first priority.
Mr Perrottet said on Monday, barely two hours after he was elected in a party meeting that he had scheduled a meeting for later in the day with Health Minister Brad Hazzard and other health officials to go over the roadmap, suggesting there were “issues” with its current form.
It was reported Mr Perrottet had considered opening the state on Friday, as NSW is expected to hit 70 per cent of its population fully vaccinated this week.
However, he initially poured cold water on the idea.
“‘We are at an important juncture. On Monday (next week), the state opens up and we want to get people back into work, get business open again, and that is the focus of our government today,” he said.
Mr Perrottet later clarified his comments, but said his current intention was to stick to the plan.
“I will sit down with Minister Hazzard and the health team alongside Minister Ayres and members of the crisis cabinet to have a discussion in relation to the road map, but obviously, this is early days and we have done so well and my intention at this stage is that (opening) day will remain on Monday for next week, but there are a number of issues that need to be looked at,” he said.
The former treasurer had been a key proponent in pushing the NSW government to stay open, or open up early due to the economic benefit.
He stood by these comments on Tuesday saying lockdown’s were a thing of the past.
“I don‘t want to go back into lockdown,” he said.
“Now, we’re committed to the national roadmap, and that is clearly set out in the Doherty report that, from time to time, there may be the need for targeted restrictions. But ultimately, we‘ve got to learn to live alongside this virus, and vaccination has been the key to doing it. “
On the weekend, the now premier said he was only focused on one thing - which was becoming the Liberal leader.
“I don’t want to pre-empt the situation we are in at the moment … If we are successful, we will work through these issues,” he said.
“I am completely focused, and have been as this time as Treasurer on keeping people safe, that we keep people in jobs, and we keep businesses open.
