Couple in locked down in Bondi apartment speak out about the ‘frightening’ situation as cases soar

Angus Hall and Ashley Ware could be staring down the barrel of weeks stuck inside their Bondi apartment as cases inside the complex continue to rise.

A couple trapped in a locked down unit block in Sydney’s east have spoken out about conditions inside their building, which they fear could go on much longer than the expected two weeks.

Angus Hall and Ashley Ware live in one of 29 apartments inside the Bondi Junction complex, where nine cases of coronavirus have been detected across five households.

All residents have been deemed close contacts and must undergo 14 days of quarantine, but Mr Hall said on Wednesday it had been suggested the lockdown could go for longer.

“The letter they wrote yesterday definitely gave them scope for it to be extended. There is no word from the authorities yet as to when that would be extended,” he told Sunrise.

“We are expecting, given they worded the letter that way, that they probably will extend it. At this stage we have not heard anything.”

There were grim scenes outside the block on Tuesday with police units and security guards patrolling the Botany Street building, which has been taped off from the public.

Ms Ware told the program they were not allowed to leave their apartment under any circumstance, not even to put their bin out.

“We are not meant to leave at all. If any deliveries come to our door they will buzz and then leave it at our door and then buzz again when it is left, and then we can get it. We are not allowed to take our bins out or anything like that,” she said.

There were also strict rules stipulating that residents must only receive deliveries between 12pm and 8pm, but there had been an allowance made for the couple on Wednesday.

“We had some issues because we pre-ordered our grocery delivery for 9am this morning, so we had to call up our direct health line to see what the go was with that and they were quite good about it actually,” Ms Ware said.

“They said it would be fine for us to get the delivery early, so it has been quite good. Strict, but good.”

Appropriate management of the outbreak should see residents freed from lockdown on July 24, but Mr Hall was not holding his breath.

“It’s a bit frightening. We’ve been watching people come and go over the last few days, you sit there and think, is my time coming soon?” he told the program.

“We’ve been trying to fill our time otherwise and not think too much about it.”

Sydneysiders are awaiting news on whether the city’s lockdown, due to end on July 16, will be extended, with health authorities indicating it was unlikely to end as planned this week.

NSW recorded 89 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases in the current outbreak to 767.
