‘Cops everywhere’: Man charged with murder after intense roof standoff with police
Dramatic footage has captured the moment a knife-wielding man was locked in an intense stand-off with police on the roof of a NSW home.
A man has been charged with murder after falling from a roof during an intense hour-long stand-off with police in NSW.
Emergency services raced to a unit at Goonoo Goonoo Road, Tamworth about 4.30pm on Saturday for a concerns for welfare check.
Police found a 55-year-old man armed with a knife and a 47-year-old man suffering critical head injuries, who later died in hospital.
The 55-year-old has since been charged with murder, NSW Police said in a statement on Monday morning.
Dramatic footage shows the knife-wielding man shouting at police officers on top of the unit block, after locking himself in a bedroom and climbing onto the roof.
Police surrounded the front of the block below and fired bean bag rounds at the man during the stand-off, which lasted over an hour.
“You’re surrounded, there’s cops everywhere,” a voice shouted at the man in footage obtained by 9News.
At one point, the man hauled a roof tile at an officer before pushing over a ladder as police attempted to approach the roof.
The standoff eventually ended when an officer made it on the roof and chased the 55-year-old.
As the man attempted to flee, he fell to the ground in a dramatic tumble.
The man was treated by paramedics for stab wounds to his chest and taken to Tamworth Base Hospital, under police guard in a serious but stable condition.
He was later transferred to a second hospital for further treatment.
The injured 47-year-old man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before he was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital, where he later died.
“Following inquiries, the 55-year-old man was charged with murder,” police said in a statement.
Police said initial inquiries allege the two men were known to each other.
“A significant line of inquiry is around what led to the incident occurring,” Inspector Aylett said on Sunday.
“We know the two men were in the house and something has led to that male attacking the 47-year-old male and caused those significant injuries.”
The 55-year-old man was refused bail and will appear in court on Monday.
