A GROUP of male students from a Sydney college have “incited a furore” after a video of them boisterously chanting songs that “glorify rape” was leaked.

A handful of Philip Baxter College students from Sydney’s UNSW were captured on camera chanting about wishing women were “holes in the road” and wanting to “cream them by the dozen”.

News.com.au understands the incident took place on a bus during an annual “Boys’ Night Out” event on Friday.

The students — who are reportedly residents of the college — aren’t visible because it’s too dark but they can be heard loud and clear, in the clip obtained by news.com.au.

“I wish that all the ladies were little red foxes and if I were a hunter I’d shoot up in their boxes,” they chanted.

“I wish that all the ladies were buns in the oven, and if I was a baker I’d cream them by the dozen.”

At least one man can be heard objecting to the deplorable behaviour, asking, “What the f***?” as others continued to yell the verses.

“I wish that all the ladies were holes in the road, and if I was a dump truck, I’d fill them with my load,” the chants continued.

“I wish that all the ladies were bells on a tower, and I was a bellboy, I’d bang them every hour.

“I wish that all the ladies were sheep in the grass and I was a kiwi I’d do ’em up the arse.”

UNSW Student Council women’s officer Jocelyn Dracakis told news.com.au that the footage had emerged after at least two men who were travelling on the bus were so outraged by the behaviour of their fellow students they recorded it for reporting purposes.

“The video showed (the others) chanting songs on a bus with lyrics that were incredibly degrading to women and glorify acts of rape,” Ms Dracakis said.

The footage was posted on a university Facebook page where it “incited a furore and outrage among many UNSW women students, and the student community at large”.

Ms Dracakis said the incident was also reported to the Dean of Baxter, Head of the Colleges and Vice-President of the University.

UNIVERSITY RESPONDS TO ALLEGATIONS

UNSW spokeswoman Denise Knight told news.com.au the university was “appalled by the sexist and demeaning attitudes and behaviours towards women outlined in these allegations”.

“The University has zero tolerance for offensive behaviour of this nature and is taking immediate steps to investigate,” Ms Knight said.

“Meetings were convened last night between the University, college residents and student representatives, including the UNSW SRC Women’s Collective.

“The Women’s Collective has issued a statement that rightly condemns this reported behaviour.

“The University will be working closely with staff, student groups and colleges to ensure that incidents of this kind do not occur again.”

A letter of apology has reportedly been signed by residents of Philip Baxter College.

Ms Dracakis said the whistleblowers had asked to remain anonymous because they feared backlash.

“None of these students have come forward so we still don’t know who they were so I would like to see a proper investigation that takes appropriate actions against these students, whether that’s suspension or expulsion,” Ms Dracakis said.

“It’s important to show zero tolerance to this kind of behaviour.”

Ms Dracakis said she would be meeting with university officials to discuss overhauling current policies to better combat sexual harassment and discrimination.

NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT

According to the Women’s Collective, the latest incident was not an isolated one.

“(The latest incident) reflects a systematic and institutionalised sexism and oppression prevalent across colleges and universities throughout Australia and worldwide,” Ms Dracakis said.

“There’s a rape culture and we need to see the university taking responsibility for the high prevalence of sexual assault on campus and take serious action to redress the sexist culture which perpetuates attitudes that are degrading to women and precipitate sexual harassment, sexual assault and the normalisation of rape culture.”

Ms Dracakis said there have previously been reports of male students chanting at football games about raping the players’ girlfriends.

“There was also a recent incident from another college (nearby) where boys (who studied) there approached our students’ events club and asked them if they could have an “ugly stripper” come to the round house at the ‘boys-only’ event for the boys to laugh about,” she said.

“Women have been speaking out against other similar incidences of sexism fuelled by this traditionalised “bro culture” across other colleges and institutions.

“It has been reported that this kind of chanting occurs regularly across colleges everywhere, but mobile phones are usually confiscated by social co-ordinators of the events hence footage of this nature has never emerged before at UNSW.”

DEMONSTRATIONS TO DEMAND RESPECT

A ‘snap’ demonstration was held on the UNSW lawn at midday today.

“Both college residents and day students (attended) to form a human sign displaying ‘RESPECT’, hold a banner drop and to speak out against the behaviour and sexist culture at university,” Ms Dracakis said.
