Cargo ship Rio Madeira “stranded” after power failure

Crews are working to save a stranded ship off the NSW coast after its power failed on Thursday night.

A ship is stranded about 70km off the NSW coast after its power failed on Thursday night, authorities say.

The Rio Madeira, a Singaporean container ship with 27 crew on board, is currently drifting south off Narooma, while crews are en route to help tow the vessel into port.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said the ship was in no immediate danger of hitting the coast.

Media reports say the ship has more than 3000 containers on board, 126 of which are listed as “dangerous” goods.

The ship is also carrying more than 3000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and more than 200 tonnes of diesel oil.
