Brad Hazzard flags tough new mask exemption rule in fight against Delta Covid outbreak
The tough new rule is expected to be introduced as soon as possible to aid in NSW’s desperate fight to control its Delta outbreak.
NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard has flagged tougher rules on face masks in the state’s fight against the Delta outbreak.
Residents who have a medical condition that means they cannot wear a mask will have to carry evidence from a registered medical practitioner confirming this any time they leave the house.
Mr Hazzard told reporters on Thursday morning he was working with NSW Health and government lawyers to amend the Public Health Orders with the new rule.
He didn’t say when the amendment would be made or when it would come into effect, but he indicated it would be as soon as possible.
“If you don’t wear a mask for what you say is a medical reason you will be required to have on your body, in your possession, a letter or other evidence from a registered medical practitioner explaining that is actually a true situation,” he said.
Residents across NSW, including in rural and regional areas, must wear a face mask at all indoor non-residential premises unless they have a medical reason not to.
Police can stop residents in a setting where face masks are mandatory and can ask an individual to confirm the lawful reason they are not wearing one.
Officers can issue penalty notices if a person “clearly refuses” to wear a mask without a lawful reason, according to NSW government rules.
