Baby dies after house fire in Campbelltown

A baby boy has died after suffering burns “to between 80 and 90 per cent” of his body in a “confronting” scene.

A six-week-old baby has died in hospital after suffering “serious burns” after a house fire in Campbelltown, south west of Sydney.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on Darwin Road at around 2.15pm after a small fire broke out in the kitchen of the home, injuring the baby.

“The baby had sustained burns to between 80 and 90 per cent of its body and this was a very confronting scene for our paramedics,” NSW Ambulance chief superintendent Mark Gibbs said.

He was treated by paramedics and a specialist medical team from Toll Ambulance rescue helicopter before being rushed to Campbelltown Hospital with serious injuries, however tragically died a short time after arriving.

A second child was assessed for smoke inhalation, but did not require further treatment.

“Any incident involving a child, particularly a very young baby, is heartbreaking, but I’d like to commend our crews for doing an exemplary job under very difficult circumstances,” Mr Gibbs said.

An investigation into the incident is continuing and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
