The 57-year-old sculptor, known for his striking geometric designs, is believed to have passed away on Saturday afternoon at his property in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
Authorities are not treating his death as suspicious.
Tributes have poured in across social media from friends and admirers, with several reflecting on his talent and presence in the art world.
“I have just found out that the amazingly talented Dion Horstmans has moved on... It is a real shock to find out that he has passed away,” one Facebook tribute read.
“Will miss seeing you around. Rip Dion,” artist Stefanie Neal wrote.
“The world is a lesser place now without you in it... Those talented hands of yours have left their mark, and sadly will no longer,” another wrote.
“So sorry to hear this. The world will be a lesser place without him in it. Truly saddened and condolences to his family.”
Originally from Wellington, New Zealand, Horstmans spent 15 years in the film industry crafting props and models before transitioning into full-time art.
His signature works included bold, multidimensional sculptures often painted in fluorescent colours. They earned him recognition in Australia’s contemporary art scene, where he displayed his works across 24 exhibitions since 2006.
He is survived by two daughters, Juni and Zaza, both based in Byron Bay, who have followed in their father’s artistic footsteps.
