A Sydney dad who allegedly took his two young children from their Sydney home was one half of a well-known Australian R&B duo and had performed at Glastonbury.

Police issued an amber alert on Thursday, saying they were extremely worried for the safety of Dennis Dowlut’s two children Bowie and Basten, aged four and 10.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, Bowie and Basten were at a home on Carthona Avenue in Darling Point.

Despite protests from the children’s mother, their father Dennis packed the family into an SUV, saying they were travelling to Melbourne, NSW police allege.

About 3am, their mother was allegedly forced out of the car at Alexandria and notified police.

Mr Dowlut is best known for producing music with his brother Darren, who died of cancer in 2005, under the guise of Disco Montego, earlier known as Kaylan.

They released an album called No Commandments in 2000 that reached number 23 in Australia and spawned three top-50 singles.

Kaylan toured nationally as supporting artists for the likes of the Vengaboys, Destiny’s Child and Bardot.

Members of the public spotted Dennis and his kids at Panania Railway Station about 9am on Thursday and recognised him and the two children from earlier media reports.

They immediately called police.

“The man has been taken to hospital for assessment and the children will be reunited with family,” NSW Police said in a statement.

At the time NSW Police said they had “extreme concerns” for the children’s safety.

“Police are asking the public to be on alert, (do) not approach but report any sightings of this man, or vehicle to triple-0,” NSW Police said in an earlier statement.
