New South Wales rail workers vote to strike

TRAIN services in Sydney could be in further chaos after rail workers voted in favour of industrial action.

Sydney Trains staff to decide on strike action

SYDNEY commuters face further disruption to train services after rail workers voted to take industrial action as they continue to fight for a six per cent pay rise.

The result of the ballot, announced on Friday by the Rail, Train and Bus Union, comes at the end of a week in which the city’s train network went into meltdown with mass cancellations and delays, blamed on driver sickness and storm damage.

“An incredible result, well done Sydney and NSW Trains! By standing together and returning a YES vote we have shown management that we are strong and united in our demand for a good agreement,” the union said on its Facebook page

“It is important to note that the results of this ballot, if successful, will mean workers will have the option of taking protected industrial action,” a Rail, Tram and Bus Union spokeswoman said in a statement before the vote result was known.

“But it’s important to stress that at this stage, no action is being undertaken.”

Rail bosses met with union heavyweights on Thursday to discuss the issues ahead of what’s being called a “pressure day” on Monday when the new Hornsby junction begins operating.

Transport Minister Andrew Constance has demanded a review of the timetable within a fortnight but shut down suggestions passengers should be refunded for the mass inconvenience.
