Metro shut over busy Sydney weekend with The Everest, Sculpture by the Sea and Crows Nest Fest

The shutdown will impact major events, including one set to be attended by King Charles.

Commuters are furious after it was announced Sydney’s Metro will be closed this weekend despite major events, including one excepted to be attended by King Charles.

Transport for NSW announced on Monday that services between Tallawong and Sydenham “would not run” and would be replaced by buses due to trackwork, only two months after the Metro opened.

“Use Sydney Trains services between Chatswood, the City and Sydenham,” Transport for NSW said.

The Everest, Sculpture by the Sea and Crows Nest Fest are just some of the major events in Sydney this coming weekend.

Sydneysiders took to social media to vent their frustration.

“On Everest weekend …” one wrote on X.

“You folks are a joke! The metro is packed on a weekend,” another said.

The Everest at Royal Randwick, which is sold out and set to be attended by King Charles and Queen Camilla, will be impacted by the Metro closure.

Royal Randwick Racecourse is serviced by the Light Rail, and buses leaving from Central Station, one of the Metro stops.

Organisers of Crows Nest Fest said Transport for NSW were “reckless” for organising trackwork on the same weekend.

“After eight months of careful planning, including expanding the festival footprint to accommodate a surge in attendees from the newly opened Metro, this decision will have an unforeseen impact on us,” they wrote on Instagram.

The line will shut down for work on the extension of the south west Metro.

A Sydney Metro spokesperson said the linework on the M1 could not be rescheduled but apologised for any inconvenience.
