Man jailed over GoPro gang rape of teenage girl
AYDEN Devereux, who filmed his mates gang-raping an intoxicated, intellectually disabled 16-year-old girl at a Sydney party, has been jailed for at least five years.
A MAN who filmed his mates gang-raping an intoxicated, intellectually disabled, 16-year-old girl has been sentenced to at least five years jail.
Ayden Devereux, 26, was supported by more than a dozen family and friends when he was sentenced in NSW District Court to seven years and six months with a non-parole period of five years for two counts of sexual intercourse without consent in company on the girl at a party at St Clair in Western Sydney.
Judge Chris Hoy described how Devereux used a GoPro camera to record a 17-minute film of the attack on the barely conscious girl and could be heard on the footage saying, “let’s go, who is up?”, “She will do us one by one,” “nah bro, one by one we will all get a f***,” “let’s get this party started c**** respect the line, respect the line,” and, “next, next, next, next.”
Judge Chris Hoy said the attack was “vile and revolting behaviour inflicted upon … a young girl of 16 years.”
“She was subjected to what can only be described as gang rape, ongoing, and (Devereux) recorded it,” he said.
“At times five males were gathered around a naked, intoxicated and sometimes asleep 16-year-old girl taking turns and encouraging each other to achieve their own sexual satisfaction.”
The court heard the girl was invited to the party by co-offender Tristan Carlyle-Watson, 26, who had made contact with her through Facebook.
The girl agreed to go and only met Carlyle-Watson in person for the first time when he picked her up on the day of the party May 22, 2015.
At the party the girl drank alcohol and smoked cannabis and became so intoxicated she was limp-limbed and barely conscious when she was attacked by the men in the bedroom.
She woke in the morning to find herself naked and alone in the room. She left the house wearing just a towel.
The court heard the girl had a mild intellectual disability, with her intelligence level being below 99.6 per cent of her peers.
She never reported the rape and the crime may have gone undetected except Devereux and the owner of the GoPro camera Frank Kordis were arrested by police on vandalism charges two days later and device was seized.
Officers discovered the video on the GoPro and managed to find the girl who said she blacked out at the party and had no memory of the assault.
Devereux chose to plead guilty but his co-offenders, Carlyle-Watson, Andrew Waters and Kurt Stevenson were all found guilty by a jury following a seven-week trial.
They are due to be sentenced next week.
A fifth co-offender, who can only be identified as ML because he was aged 17 at the time, was sentenced to five years with a non-parole period of three years after receiving a 40 per cent discount for a very early guilty plea.
