Cyclists injured in vehicular accident in Mascot, Sydney

SIX cyclists have been injured in an accident in the Sydney suburb of Mascot this morning, just after 8:30am.

The accident between a vehicle and a number of cyclists happened in a city-bound lane of Southern Cross Drive, near the intersection of Wentworth Avenue, a NSW police spokeswoman confirmed to news.com.au.

Seven News reported six injured cyclists have been transported to hospital and rescue crews are still on scene. TripleM’s Grill Team tweeted there were five people injured.

The five seriously injured cyclists have been taken to St Vincent’s and St George hospitals with limb, head and suspected spinal injuries, which are believed to not be critical.

Police investigators have established and crime scene and are speaking with the driver of the car involved.

The Roads and Maritime Service’s live traffic cam showed heavy traffic on Southern Cross Drive, which is near Sydney Airport. Vehicles are being diverted onto General Holmes Drive and O’Riordan Street, or Botany Road.

There have been a raft of serious accidents between vehicles and cyclists this year in Sydney including the death of Sydney businesswoman Casey Kinnaird in January when she was involved in a collision in Waterfall.
