The young woman has been identified as Mackenzie Anderson.

Despite the efforts of police and paramedics, Ms Anderson died at the scene after sustaining a number of stab wounds.

Newcastle City Commander Superintendent Wayne Humphrey told reporters that first responders were shocked by the scene they encountered.

“I’ve just spent the last 20 minutes or so viewing body-worn footage and it was a horrendous scene, horrendous,” Superintendent Humphrey said.

“There was also a three-year-old child at the location. The child was covered in blood but it appears, thankfully, that the child was not injured and is being cared for by relatives.”

Superintendent Humphrey said the man police arrested at the apartment had previously been in a relationship with Ms Anderson and was the subject of an apprehended violence order and had recently been released on parole.

“There is an AVO in play but the circumstances that have occurred since he was released on parole are under investigation,” Superintendent Humphrey said.
