Young woman says she was indecently assaulted by ride-sharing driver
A 23-YEAR-OLD woman says she was subjected to a chilling attack by a ride-share driver as she tried to leave the car.
A TERRIFIED young woman from Sydney has told police she was set upon by an Uber driver in Sydney’s southwest yesterday.
A ride-sharing driver, understood to be working for the tech giant, has been charged over the alleged indecent assault of a woman in Sydney’s southwest.
Police say the 23-year-old had got into the vehicle at a home at Ambarvale, in the city’s southwest, about 5.15am on Sunday, to travel to a home in nearby Camden.
However, when she arrived at her destination, she told police the driver indecently assaulted her and grabbed her arm when she tried to leave the vehicle.
Police arrested a 52-year-old Ambarvale man about 12.40pm on Sunday and charged him with two counts of assault with act of indecency. He was granted conditional bail to appear at Picton Local Court on September 25.
An Uber spokeswoman told news.com.au the alleged attack is “deeply upsetting and has no place anywhere”.
“The driver’s access to the app has been removed and we are working closely with police to support their investigation,” she said.
All prospective driver-partners undergo a thorough screening process in accordance with state law before gaining access to the Uber app.
The screening process includes a motor vehicle records check and criminal records check in accordance with NSW’s regulatory framework.
