A 23-year-old woman has been charged with the murder of a 51-year-old family member following a domestic stabbing in East Maitland overnight.

Michael John Carroll was found with two stab wounds to his upper torso when emergency services arrived at a home on Ronald Street home in Tenambit about 7.20pm on Saturday night.

Despite assistance from police and paramedics, he died at the scene.

A 23-year-old woman, who police say is a family member of Mr Carroll, has been charged with murder and remanded in custody following a brief court appearance on Sunday.

Detective Inspector Ranald Urquhart, crime manager for the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District, said the woman was not at the residence when police arrived and showed up a short time later.

“She is providing assistance to police,” Inspector Urquhart said.

“This is being treated as a domestic violence murder.”

Detectives have commenced an investigation under Strike Force Creekborough.

A crime scene was established at the home, which is being forensically examined.

Inspector Urquhart said police did not currently know what led to the incident.

He said a weapon has not been recovered.

“We’ll be … looking for any information that people might be able to provide in terms of what they’ve seen,” Inspector Urquhart said.
