A man has been charged with attempted murder after an 84-year-old woman was brutally bashed in her northern Sydney retirement village bedroom.
Patricia, an 84-year-old great-grandmother who had only moved into the North Turramurra facility six weeks earlier, came face-to-face with a stranger when she returned to her room on November 16.
The man left her with multiple serious injuries including a fractured nose, bleeding on her brain and cuts to her face, chest and arm.
Police on Wednesday arrested a 43-year-old man in Wahroonga and raided a Pyrmont hotel as well as a house in Orange, in central-west NSW, seizing clothing and jewellery from the properties.
The man has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated break and enter and dealing with proceeds of crime, among other offences.
Police say the man committed a break and enter in Cromer on Sydney’s northern beaches the day before the assault.
He’s been refused bail to appear at Hornsby Local Court on Thursday. Patricia’s daughter said her mother “doesn’t want to be in this world anymore” because she felt so unsafe after being assaulted.
Caroline said her mother – an “eloquent, proud, wonderful human being” – was also recently widowed, with her husband dying in April.
“This has been a very, very shocking and distressing event in our family and mum is a very, very strong lady, and we will help her get over this, hopefully, and get her home again,” she told reporters on November 20.
Patricia is currently undergoing rehabilitation.
