Teen critical in hospital, another teen charged after Glebe cliff fall following police chase
A teenage boy has been charged and another is critical in hospital after a police chase led to a horror incident in Sydney this morning.
A teenager has been charged in relation to a police chase that resulted in another teen being hospitalised after a 10m cliff fall in the inner Sydney suburb of Glebe.
Just before 2am on Thursday, police saw two motorcycles – which had allegedly been stolen from Sydney’s CBD – being ridden near the intersection of Bridge Road and Glebe Point Road.
The teenagers turned the motorcycles into Toxteth Road, a dead-end street, and were directed to stop by police.
The teenagers failed to stop before climbing a fence that barricaded a cliff, where both teenagers fell.
A 17-year-old male suffered serious injuries after falling to the bottom and was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He underwent emergency surgery and remains in a critical condition.
A second 17-year-old male suffered minor injuries, having broken his fall by landing on a small ledge.
Two officers scaled the fence, with a male probationary constable landing on the same ledge as the second teen. One officer suffered an arm injury and another officer rendered assistance.
The second teenager was treated in hospital before being taken to Newtown police station.
He was charged with stealing a motor vehicle, taking and driving without consent, never licensed person driving a vehicle on the road, police pursuit (not stop), driving recklessly and breach of bail.
He was refused bail to appear at a children’s court on Friday.
Officers from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command’s critical incident team have launched an investigation into the incident that will be subject to an independent review.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.
