Tradie accused of sexually assaulting three women he met on Tinder denied bail

A Sydney tradie accused of sexually assaulting three women he met on Tinder will stay in custody after a court heard he downloaded another dating app.

Australia's Shame: Horrifying trend in violence against women

A Sydney tradie accused of sexually assaulting three women he met on Tinder is set to stay behind bars on remand until he goes to trial after a court heard he had breached his bail by downloading a dating app.

Joshua Rini will stand trial in the NSW District Court next year where he will face multiple counts of sexual intercourse without consent.

He made a bail application on Wednesday, with his lawyer Ivan Vizintin submitting to the court a letter from his partner that he was a “family man” - despite the fact he had downloaded a dating app.

He was arrested in July last year after two women alleged he sexually assaulted them after meeting on Tinder

The women alleged the assaults occurred at his Glebe home, in May and December 2019.

Following media attention, a third alleged victim came forward claiming that Mr Rini sexually assaulted her at her Woollahra home in 2017 after they also met on the dating app.

He was released on bail but he was remanded in custody last month after he was found to have breached his strict bail conditions for the second time.

The court heard on Wednesday his first breach related to a failure to provide his residential details to police.

And a second breach occurred when he accessed a dating application similar to the one on which he met his alleged victims.

Crown prosecutor Ellen Dando opposed his release, arguing he was a risk of committing further offences and failing to appear before the courts.

“He’s gone out of his way to covertly download a dating app that is similar to those referenced by all three complainants,” she said.

“Not only that, it’s at odds with his submission from his partner that he is a devoted family man and indicative of his disregard for the court and likelihood he may commit further offences and endanger female members of the community.”

Mr Vizintin told the court Mr Rini had accessed an app that was the Chinese community’s equivalent of Tinder.

He argued Mr Rini had not breached bail over failing to report to police.

“He’s motivated to take this matter to trial,” Mr Vizintin said.

He also told Judge Craig Smith that at trial it would be a point of contention as to whether Mr Rini had knowledge as to whether his alleged victims had given consent.

He applied for bail on the basis that he should be released to support his family.

However, Judge Smith denied his release application, meaning he is set to remain behind bars until the matter goes to trial in February or March next year.

“As a mature person, he would have known, to put it simply, that it was not on,” Judge Smith said of Mr Rini’s recent bail breach in which he downloaded a dating app.

“That he must have thought that he could take the risk of doing it and not get caught.”

Mr Rini, who appeared via audiovisual link from Silverwater Correctional Centre, nodded as he was denied bail.

He will appear in court for arraignment next week.
