Three boys, 14, charged after motorcyclist killed during police chase near Gunnedah, NSW
Three 14-year-olds were allegedly trying to flee from police in a stolen ute when they fatally struck a motorcyclist and kept driving.
Three teenage boys who were allegedly trying to flee from police in a stolen ute when they slammed into a motorcycle – killing its rider – have been charged.
Police gave chase to the ute on the Kamilaroi Highway, west of Gunnedah in regional NSW, after it allegedly failed to stop at about 7.15am on Tuesday.
The vehicle had earlier been reported stolen from Moree, police allege.
NSW Police say the ute soon collided with a motorcycle on the highway, with officers stopping to assist the critically injured rider.
He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.
The motorcyclist is believed to have pulled out of a service station and into the path of the ute just before the crash, the ABC reported.
It is alleged the ute did not stop and continued through Gunnedah onto the Oxley Highway, with police initiating a second pursuit.
The vehicle ran off the road east of Gunnedah and three occupants allegedly ran from the scene, according to NSW Police.
Three boys, all aged 14, were arrested following a search.
One of the boys – who police will allege was the driver – now faces 15 charges including aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death (escaping pursuit), dangerous driving occasioning death, fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, and face blackened/disguised with intent to commit indictable offence.
The other two teenagers have been charged with five offences including take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, face blackened/disguised with intent commit indictable offence.
All three children were refused bail to appear in a children’s court on Wednesday.
