Terrifying home invasion rocks quiet suburban Sydney street

A family of four has been assaulted with “steel bars” during a terrifying home invasion on a suburban street in Sydney’s inner west.

A family of four has been terrorised during an early-morning home invasion in Sydney’s inner west on Sunday, with police hunting for four men who stormed the suburban home armed with a metal bar.

Police and paramedics rushed to Lucas Road, Burwood around 2am on Sunday after four people broke into the residence, leaving a father in his 60s with head injuries.

Police were told a father, mother and their adult son and daughter were assaulted during the ordeal, with their assailants stealing a phone and car keys before fleeing the scene.

It’s believed police are investigating whether the incident was a case of mistaken identity, with the home intruders leaving the family’s car in their driveway.

All four members of the family were treated by paramedics and taken to Royal Prince Alfred hospital in a stable condition.

A spokesman for NSW Ambulance said a man in his 60s was treated for head injuries following the incident which shocked the local community.

One local resident, Elizabeth Zhu, said she was “totally shocked” by the incident.

She said she did not hear the sirens and was alarmed when she walked out her door early on Sunday morning to see police scouring the property.

“I was in tears because I know the family,” she said.

She described it as “very very scary” for the normally-quiet street.

“Someone just went in with steel bars and attacked,” she said.

“It’s still just unbelievable.”

She described the family as “very quiet” and “very nice people”.

She said she spoke to the mother on Sunday morning while she was still in hospital, with the husband being treated for a head injury.

She said she was perplexed as to why the family was targeted.

“I just thought if I wanted money, I wouldn’t go into their house because there’s so many nice houses on that street,” she said.

Officers from Burwood Police Area Command have launched an investigation into the incident.
