A Year 6 student was allegedly sent a gun threat from a fellow student, with his mother furious over the punishment handed to the boy by the school.

The boy was sent a photo of a gun on Facebook messenger by his classmate alongside the message: “Hey. Don’t come to school”.

The boy’s mum Katie told 2GB Radio on Friday morning she went to Sydney primary school the next day but was left “underwhelmed” by the principal’s response.

“I burst into tears in her office and said, hey, this is pretty serious. My son’s pretty shaken,” she said.

“We need to involve the police. We need to speak to the child. We need to make sure there’s nothing here at the school that could harm anybody.”

She says she was told the school would “follow up” and contact the boy’s mum.

Disappointed with the school’s response, Katie went to Chatswood Police Station and showed them the photo. She then made a formal complaint.

The next day the school’s principal called Katie and told her the boy was going to be suspended for two days.

Katie told 2GB host Ben Fordham she felt “the consequence didn’t fit the action”.

The school told her it was a toy replica gun given to the boy by his aunt.

“There’s two weeks of school left. My son wants to be able to enjoy his year six graduation activities and the fun events that happened and he’s just uncomfortable at this point,” she said.

“It’s terrifying and my son deserves to go to school and have fun and feel safe.”

Katie said the incident was “completely unacceptable”.

“This student shouldn’t be attending school the rest of the year. This is a pretty severe thing to threaten my son’s life,” she said.

“My son is a good boy. He’s involved in sports and gets good grades. He’s not a menace. He’s not a bully. He’s just a good friend of everybody kind of kid.”

NSW Police have been contacted for comment.
