A 16-year-old boy has been stabbed to death after he attended a party in Western Sydney and became involved in a brawl over a girl.

A fight broke out at the Australis Drive gathering in Ropes Crossing at about 3am on Saturday.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Tickner said the tussle began over a disagreement over a girl who was also at the home before the fight later spilled out onto the front lawn of the property.

It was then, police allege, a teenager produced a knife and stabbed the victim.

“They are young boys, probably with some hormones running through the system, and somebody thought they had to defend the right of their girlfriend at the scene,” Mr Tickner said.

“And unfortunately it’s led to a young boy being killed.

“They shouldn't have been carrying knives in the first place.

“He had his whole life ahead of him.”

Mr Tickner told reporters three teenagers involved in the incident fled from the scene while neighbours tried to help the victim.

Officers attended the scene on Saturday morning and found the suspected weapon, believed to be a kitchen knife, tossed into a nearby drain.

Forensic tests are yet to determine if that knife was connected to the crime.

Police are still searching for the teenagers involved with Mr Tickner urging them to hand themselves in.

“It's just a matter of time before we’re knocking on the door and we will bring them back here either way.”
