Teen charged after police pursuit in stolen car led to crash
An unlicensed teenager took a stolen car on a late-night joy ride through Sydney before coming to a crashing halt, police claim.
An unlicensed teenager engaged police in a late-night pursuit through Sydney in a stolen car before crashing into another vehicle and injuring the woman inside, police allege.
At 11.30pm on Sunday July 3, police attempted to stop a black VW Amarok wagon they had identified as an alleged stolen vehicle.
The 17-year-old driver allegedly failed to stop while driving along Cowpasture Rd near Horningsea Park, and police gave chase.
The pursuit ended after less than 10kms when the driver – who has never held a drivers licence – crashed into another car at an intersection at Prestons.
The teenager attempted to outrun police on foot, but officers caught up and arrested him. His two passengers also fled the scene.
A 63-year-old woman was trapped in the silver Peugeot for 30 minutes until she was able to be released by Fire and Rescue NSW. She was treated by paramedics for minor injuries before being taken to Liverpool Hospital.
The 17-year-old driver was also taken to Liverpool Hospital for mandatory testing.
Police later established the VW wagon was stolen from Clontarf in northern Sydney a week prior to the crash.
The teen driver was charged with driving dangerously and not stopping during a police pursuit, driving a stolen car, driving without ever holding a licence, and driving recklessly in a dangerous manner.
He was refused bail to appear in a children’s court on Monday July 4, 2022.
Police are investigating the identities of the other two occupants of the stolen car who fled the scene.
Anyone who may have witnessed the scene, or who has dashcam footage, should contact Liverpool Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
