Teen allegedly drove BMW at more than 120km/h in drag race
A teenage P-plater driving a BMW allegedly reached a frightening speed in a 60km/h zone during a drag race in Sydney’s west.
A teenage P-plater is accused of exceeding 120km/h in a luxury BMW during an alleged drag race with an older man in Western Sydney on Wednesday.
A 17-year-old male and a 29-year-old man – both provisional drivers – will face court next month after allegedly street racing at Fairfield West.
Traffic and Highway Patrol officers were patrolling Smithfield Rd at Fairfield West about 11pm on Wednesday when they spotted a Toyota Prado allegedly being driven at 120km/h in a 60km/h zone.
Police will allege they then saw a blue BMW being driven by the 17-year-old faster than 120km/h in the 60km/h zone in order to pass the Toyota.
Police stopped both vehicles and discovered the 29-year-old Toyota was a P2 licence holder (green P-plate) while the driver of the BMW was a P1 licence holder (red P-plate).
Both drivers were issued court attendance notices for street racing and exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h. Their licences have been suspended.
The man and the teenager are due to appear at Fairfield Local Court February 9.
The maximum court-imposed fine for street racing is $3,300 on the first offence and $3,300 and/or nine months’ jail for a second offence, while a 12-month automatic disqualification applies to those convicted.
Speeding by more than 45km/h carries a maximum court-imposed fine of $2,530 for the driver of a light vehicle and a six-month automatic disqualification applies to those convicted.
