A Sydney woman endured a terrifying ordeal on Mother’s Day after she and her child were allegedly abducted by her ex-partner.

The 36-year-old man faced court after being accused of repeatedly hitting the 28-year-old woman as a heated argument allegedly escalated into physical violence.

Officers were told the trio were at a home on Ivy Street, Greenacre, when a dispute broke out about 9am Sunday.

Police will allege the man hit the woman multiple times in the face, head and body as she tried to flee with her eight-month-old son.

But the man allegedly forced them into his car.

On average, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner.

Almost 10 women a day are hospitalised for assault injuries at the hands of a spouse or domestic partner.

Every day in May, as part of Domestic and Family Violence Awareness Month, news.com.au will tell the stories behind those shocking statistics.

Detectives were told the woman tried to escape twice, once at Glassop Street at Yagoona where she attempted to ask fellow passer-bys by to help her before she was allegedly forced back into the car.

She was then allegedly driven to her home in Sadlier and the man then left.

Police were alerted about 8pm.

They arrested the man at a home in Greenacre before he was taken to Bankstown Police station and charged with several offences including taking/detaining a person, common assault, breaching an AVO and breaching bail.

He was refused bail and will appear in Bankstown Local Court on Monday.

His blue Nissan Pulsar sedan was seized for forensic examination.
