New data has exposed a frightening reality in one state, with a map revealing the most dangerous suburbs at night.

New data shows a frightening reality in one Australian state, with a grim map revealing which local government areas have the worst crime rates at night.

The map, compiled from government data by Astor Legal, revealed between October 2023 and November 2024, NSW recorded 93,500 crimes against people, with more than half of those offences occurring under the cover of darkness and many crimes alcohol related.

The most dangerous part of the state at night was located in a remote area about 650km northwest of Sydney, with Walgett holding the highest rate of night time incidents recording 3027.6 offences per 100,000 residents.

The area had a total of 167 night time offences, with 53 per cent of the incidents alcohol related.

In second place was Moree Plains located on the QLD border recording 2230.2 incidents per 100,000 residents at night time.

More than 34 per cent of night time crimes were alcohol related.

Sydney was ranked the most dangerous part of Greater Sydney at night with an incident rate of 1478.2 per 100,000 people.

The city was ranked the sixth most dangerous place in NSW with 62 per cent of criminal offences occurring at night and 47 per cent of offences alcohol related.

Campbelltown and Penrith ranked second and third in the Greater Sydney area.

Mosman ranked the second safest place in NSW with 160 night time incidents per 100,000 people with almost half those offences due to alcohol, followed by Hornsby which was ranked fifth safest.

The South Coast town of Kiama was the safest place to be in regional NSW at night, with an incident rate of 243.9 per 100,000, more than 37 per cent of night time offences alcohol related.

Astor Legal principal lawyer Avinash Singh said the most common criminal offence to occur between 6pm and 6am in NSW were domestic violence assaults, equating to almost 40 per cent of night time crime.

Assaults that were not related to domestic violence accounted for almost 38 per cent of night time crime.

Mr Singh said almost half of domestic violence incidents occurred at night, with 38 per cent alcohol related.

Walgett, Moree Plains and Coonamble had the highest rates of night time domestic violence assaults, while Sydney, Campbelltown and Blacktown had the worst rates in the Greater Sydney area.

The worst areas for assaults not related to domestic violence were Coonamble, Walgett and Sydney.

Lachlan, Warrumbungle Shire and Narromine in the state’s west had the worst rates of night time sexual offences.

Mr Singh said Narromine also had the highest rates of abduction and kidnapping followed by Snowy Monaro and Leeton in the state’s southwest.

Robbery was most common in Moree Plains, Sydney and Griffith and murder, which only made up 0.1 per cent of night time crime, occurred most in Narromine, Forbes and Richmond Valley
