A bullet has been fired through the window of a primary school with children inside.

Police were called to Macquarie Fields Public School, in Sydney’s southwest, at about 12.45pm on Tuesday after they received a report that a classroom window had been broken by a metal projectile.

A group of “tiny” Year 1 and Year 2 students, along with their teacher, were inside the classroom at the time and heard the “small calibre bullet” smash the window.

Despite the alarming incident, the school was not put into lockdown.

Police believe the shooting is not targeted and that the firearm involved was shot from a distance, according to Detective Superintendent Grant Healey

“So [the class] heard a window smash, the bullet has come into the classroom, but it’s been stopped by the blind, so it hasn’t come into the classroom with any speed or velocity; it was just enough to smash the window,” he told reporters.

No students or staff were injured as a result of the bullet.

Officers were called to the school on Fields Rd to investigate after the projectile was found in a classroom.

Mr Healey described the incident as a “totally reckless act” which could have killed or injured someone.

“A bullet can have catastrophic effects on somebody or it could just put a hole in the window,” he said.

Police are appealing for anyone with information or footage related to the incident to come forward.

“Police would like anybody who was in the Macquarie Fields area today, around about 12pm or shortly after 12pm, to contact Crimestoppers,” Mr Healey said.

More to come.
