Police charge man who allegedly broke in to the Australian Museum

A man who had his own version of the movie, allegedly breaking into the Australian Museum, will face court today.

It’s like the film Night at the Museum, but the dinosaur didn't come to life. Which is just as well given the midnight intruder put his head in the mouth of one.

Police have charged a man who allegedly broke into a Sydney museum, spent part of the night there and stole an object.

Police allege that just after 1am last Sunday, the 25-year-old entered the Australian Museum in Sydney’s CBD and walked through the premises for about 40 minutes.

CCTV picked up the man staring at the exhibits, phoning his mates in darkened corridors, rifling through cupboards and at one point taking a selfie of his head in a dinosaur’s skull.

The Australian Museum is the country’s oldest musuem and specialises in natural history and anthropology.

After allegedly breaking in and taking his own tour of the exhibitions, the intruder then removed a brown cowboy hat off a stand – believed to be owned by a member of staff – before he left the premises, New South Wales Police said.

Police released images of the man on Friday in the hope of finding him.

He turned himself into Surry Hills police station about 5pm yesterday.

He was charged with break and enter, was refused bail, and is due to appear at Central Local Court today.
