‘Capable of a violent act’: Manhunt after one dead, one critical in Sydney construction site stabbing

Devastated family and colleagues have reacted to the moment they realised a father and son had been viciously attacked at a worksite.

One dead, one critical in St Peters stabbing

Devastated family members ran to a Sydney construction site after a father and son were viciously attacked yesterday.

A woman, believed to be related to the victims, was seen distressed as she ran towards the St Peters construction site, where Albert Metledge, 76, was fatally stabbed.

His son, Antony, 33, was yesterday taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

The distressed woman turned to cameras saying she “had to say goodbye”.

Police are still hunting for the man behind the alleged stabbing, who reportedly attacked the father and son at the site on the Princes Highway, in Sydney’s inner west yesterday. Emergency services were first notified about 1pm on Wednesday.

The distressed looking woman, believed to be related to the victims, was seen running towards the taped off crime scene, where she was ushered through into the site by waiting police officers.

Video showed the woman mouthing to the camera that she wanted to say “her goodbye”.

Other workers on the site described the victim as an “absolute gentleman”, saying the violent attack was “devastating”.

“NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the men, but despite their efforts, one man died at the scene,” police said yesterday.

Following the attack, Antony was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition to undergo surgery.

“RIP uncle Albert. The family is in shock and unable to talk or see anyone at the moment,” one relative posted to Facebook yesterday.

A large-scale search was under way to locate a third man, a 49-year-old understood to be a Russian national, who officers were told fled the scene.

He reportedly hitched a ride to Brighton-Le-Sands.

He is described as being of caucasian appearance, about 180 centimetres tall, with a large build and a shaved head.

He was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt, long blue work pants and brown work boots and may have been carrying a construction helmet and a high-vis shirt.

Inspector Chad Deegenaars this afternoon told reporters the alleged offender was last seen in the Rockdale area shortly after the stabbing.

“We believe that he is capable of a violent act which he has done,” he said.

He said the knife used in the attack was found still inside the 33-year-old.

Albert Metledge, a prominent Sydney property owner, is believed to be the developer of the project where the incident unfolded, The Daily Telegraphreports.

Antony is the director of Metrix Developments.

Insp Deegenaars said investigators were still trying to determine “what the disagreement was, what the motive was”.

“What we do know is that the parties were known to each other. It doesn’t appear to be a random attack,” Insp Deegenaars said.
