A three-week-old kitten has been saved from a horrible fate after it was found abandoned in a garbage bag in a Sydney street.

Police are searching for the “cruel” person responsible for tying the kitten up inside a garbage bag and throwing it down an embankment into a vacant lot in Jones Street, Pyrmont.

The incident is believed to have occurred on February 18.

“About 5.30pm that day, a passer-by heard the kitten crying for help and took the animal to a nearby veterinarian for treatment,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“The kitten has since made a full recovery.”

Police were notified of the act of animal cruelty yesterday and have since commended an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Investigators are appealing for anyone witnesses or anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time to come forward.

Anyone with dashcam or CCTV vision from that area is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Photos of kitten were posted to the NSW Police Facebook page, sparking outrage from hundreds of social media users, with many questioning how someone could do such a thing.

“Why do people do such horrendous things. Absolutely no heart or morals. Why couldn’t they take it to the RSPCA,” one person asked.

“Oh the poor little sweetheart, how could anyone be so cruel,” another said.

One added: “People who think this is ok are sick and need to be locked up. Makes me sick.”
