Police have arrested a man after a ‘shooting’ behind Parliament House

Police have arrested a man and seized a water pistol after they rushed to a park near the NSW Parliament House following reports of shots fired.

A man has been arrested and a water pistol has been seized after a shooting scare near the NSW state parliament in Sydney.

Police rushed to the Domain behind parliament house about 1pm on Thursday after reports a man had discharged what was thought to be a gel blaster into the ground several times.

The ‘gunman’ had left in a car before police arrived, but was arrested a couple of hours later.

Sydney City Police Area Command officers had rushed to the scene, but the man had left in a vehicle before they arrived.

Acting on information provided, police arrested a ride share driver in Mascot about 5.10pm.

A water pistol was seized and will be subject to further examination.

He was taken to Mascot Police Station.

Gel blasters are replica guns, used to shoot water beads, similar to paintball guns.

They are banned under firearms legislation in every state except for Queensland, which classifies them as a toy

A police spokesperson said there were no reports of injuries and a crime scene had been established.
