Two people have been arrested after a two-year-old boy was allegedly abducted by a family member, triggering a frantic state-wide search.

A man and a woman have been arrested after a two-year-old boy was allegedly abducted from his home on Friday, triggering a frantic nine-hour search.

Police issued an urgent state-wide amber alert after the child was allegedly taken outside an office on Little St in Coffs Harbour shortly after 2pm.

A 37-year-old man allegedly assaulted a 61-year-old woman and broke her arm before abducting the toddler.

Numerous witnesses and members of the public who witnessed the incident attempted to intervene and called triple zero, according to police.

Officers issued an immediate amber alert and spent the next nine hours frantically searching for the two-year-old boy, who was located at 11.30pm on Friday night.

He was found in Tenterfield, almost 300 km away from his home on the Far North Coast.

A 35-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man have been arrested and will face court on Saturday.

The woman has been charged with taking a child with intent to remove from parental control and breaching her bail conditions.

The man has been charged with taking a child with intent to remove from parental control, causing reckless grievous bodily harm and breaching his bail conditions.

Both alleged abductors will appear in Tamworth Local Court on Saturday.

It was previously reported the pair were travelling in a black 1996 Volkswagen Golf sedan with Victorian number plates.

Further information given to police indicated the couple were travelling around Inverell and Tenterfield.
