A NSW man accused of taking a three-month-old baby from a woman at knifepoint has been charged with serious domestic violence offences.

A NSW man accused of taking a baby from a woman at knifepoint in Wollongong has been charged with serious domestic violence offences.

The 23-year-old man allegedly broke into the woman’s home in Berkeley yesterday in the early hours of the morning, grabbed her throat and threw her to the ground before repeatedly hitting her in the head with a metal bed frame.

He then held a knife to the 23-year-old woman’s throat before fleeing with a three-month-old baby.

Officers from Lake Illawarra attended and found the woman with lacerations to her head, bruising to the upper body, bite marks to her hand and a fingernail ripped off. She was treated at the scene before being taken to Wollongong Hospital.

The baby was quickly found with the man by police on Northcliffe Drive, Berkeley, the Illawarra Mercuryreported, and was taken to hospital as a precaution but did not sustain any physical injuries.

The man was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station. He was charged with a string of offences including special aggravated break and enter and commit serious indict offence-inflict grievous bodily harm, as well as armed with intent to commit indictable offence; intentionally choke etc person without consent; assault occasioning actual bodily harm; destroy or damage property, and contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO.

He was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Monday.
