A man is in police custody in the NSW Hunter Region after a terrifying showdown overnight during which he was tasered after allegedly cradling a baby while holding a pair of scissors.

A woman at the scene, a property at Muswellbrook, was also stabbed in the eye and flown to hospital.

The horrific confrontation occurred at 7pm on Tuesday when officers from Hunter Valley Police District were called to a home on the Pacific Way at Muswellbrook.

Officers found a 27-year-old man in the front yard allegedly armed with a pair of scissors and carrying an 11-month-old baby girl.

Police say the man refused several demands to release the baby. He eventually relented and was then tasered by officers.

Officers found two women suffering stab wounds at the Muswellbrook home. A 30-year-old woman from Macksville was flown to John Hunter Hospital with a stab wound to her right eye, allegedly related to the scissors.

A 28-year-old Muswellbrook woman was also taken to hospital for treatment on a stab wound to her left arm and face.

Five children were also found at the property, uninjured, with their ages ranging from 11 months to seven years.

The 27-year-old man was taken to Muswellbrook police station, and investigations are continuing.
