Violent footage has shown the moment a brawl erupted at an airport between alleged associates of two notorious Sydney crime families.

The fight broke out on February 6 last year at Ballina Airport in northern NSW in the normally boring baggage claim area.

The video obtained by 9 News shows alleged Alameddine associate John Bayssari calmly waiting for his bags, when he locks eyes with alleged Hamzy member Dagher Ghamrawi.

The rivals immediately start throwing punches at each other next to the conveyor belt.

Other travellers rush to move out of the way of the fierce fight as the men brawl. A mother can be seen grabbing her daughter out of their path as they migrate away from the conveyor belt.

The alleged gang family associates are seen punching and kicking each other without any reservation, despite the public arena and dozens of onlookers.

The video shows Ghassan Amoun, the brother of Brothers 4 Life founder Basam Hamzy, running towards the fight to tackle an alleged Alameddine rival.

The four warring alleged gang affiliates break into two groups to continue the vicious brawl, the surveillance footage reveals.

Mr Amoun is still wearing his travel backpack as he tries to pull Mr Bayssari into a headlock and the pair topples onto the conveyor belt.

Police believe the violent brawl was the spark which fanned the flame of the deadly escalation in Sydney’s gangland wars.

Tensions between the Hamzy and Alameddine crime families have claimed the lives of at least 15 people in two years, according to police.

Mr Amoun himself was killed less than a year after he was involved in the brawl at the Ballina Airport.
