Newcastle man charged with rape and murder of baby girl
A 24-year-old Newcastle man has been arrested and charged with the rape and murder of a three-month-old girl.
A Hunter Valley man has been accused of sexually assaulting and killing a three-month-old girl earlier this year.
The 24-year-old was arrested at a home in Maitland, NSW, an hour west of Newcastle, on Wednesday.
He was taken to Maitland Police Station and charged with murder and sexual intercourse with a child, police said.
The arrest came after months of investigation by a strike force that was established after the infant died.
The baby girl was found in a unit on Fowler Street in Newcastle’s Hamilton South suburb on the morning of August 4 this year.
She was unresponsive and taken to John Hunter Hospital where she was declared dead.
The man is expected to appear in court later on Thursday.
