A 37-year-old man was charged with aggravated break and enter after police were called to the Canada Bay home just before 7.30pm on Monday.

Neighbour Brian D. told news.com.au he could hear “banging and screaming,” so he walked to his front door to find out what was going on, and was greeted by a woman.

“She basically said she needed help, and some man had broken into her house and I kind of just put pants on and ran outside,” he recalled.

At first, the 36-year-old said he couldn’t see the alleged intruder but saw a broken fence and damaged side door, which appeared to be where the alleged offender had forced his way in.

Brian alleged the man had a piece of wood with nails in it.

Brian said he “closed the door right away” and the alleged offender ran into a nearby room. He also told Police the man threw the piece of wood at him.

Video footage obtained exclusively by news.com.au then shows Brian bravely run into the house.

“My adrenaline was pumping at the time, said a few bad things, grabbed hold of him and got him into a position where I could immobilise him,” he explained.

He has trained in martial arts for about 14 years.

During the takedown, Brian said he had tackled the man and they both hit into a wall, and then he got him to the ground. Brian held the stranger until police arrived.

“At the time, I just wanted to stop him, I didn’t want him to hurt anyone,” Brian said, adding that the neighbourhood was supposed to be a safe space place for his family.

NSW Police told news.com.au they were called to Louden Street, Canada Bay, following reports of a break-and-enter.

“Officers attached to Burwood Area Command attended and were told a man, allegedly armed with a piece of timber, damaged a side gate before entering the house,” a police spokeswoman said.

“A 37-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Burwood Police Station.

“He was charged with aggravated break and enter and will appear before Burwood Local Court on Tuesday 10 December 2024.”
