Mum arrested after son stabbed to death on NSW’s South Coast

GRIEVING mates are paying tribute to Daniel Russell as police try to understand why his mother allegedly stabbed him to death.

A MOTHER and son are believed to have been arguing before she allegedly stabbed him to death.

The victim of yesterday’s tragic stabbing on NSW’s South Coast has been named as Daniel Russell and police have charged his 66-year-old mum with manslaughter over the stabbing.

Emergency workers were called to a home in Sanctuary Point on Monday night and found the 27-year-old man with a single stab wound to his shoulder. He died on the way to hospital, police said.

It is understood investigators are looking at the possibility the victim’s mother had armed herself following an argument.

She is being questioned by detectives at Nowra Police Station. Inspector Deborah O’Reilly could not confirm if there was a history of violence between the mother and son, or if the woman was under duress.

“Any incident like this is very tragic,” she told reporters in Nowra this morning.

“It is domestic, a mother and son,” she said today.

Two other adult family members were home at the time of the stabbing.

“They’re upset, understandably,” she added.

Mr Russell’s friends mourned his death on social media.

“God bless Daniel and I know you’re in a better place now and I’ll see you one day,” one friend wrote on Facebook in the wake of the manslaughter charge.

According to Nine News, Mr Russell’s father and his partner were also at the Sanctuary Point home at the time of the incident.

Sanctuary Point mortgage broker Ellen Thornthwaite, who spent Tuesday morning meeting with other local business owners, said the community was “shocked” and “saddened” by the news.

“A lot of people are very shocked - I am myself,” she said. “I’m sure there are many people who will be impacted by this, and having no idea what the circumstances are behind it - it’s a tragedy regardless.”

She said there were known issues with drugs in the area but something like this was it was totally unexpected.
