A man has been shot dead by police after grabbing an officer’s gun during a confrontation in Sydney’s west.

Police say the 20-year-old man struggled with two police officers, and grabbed one of the officer’s guns in St Mary’s.

During a scuffle over the weapon, at least one round was fired from that firearm, prompting the second officer to fire a round that hit the man in the stomach.

“Tragically, unfortunately, that male person has died as a result of that gunshot wound,” Assistant Commissioner Mark Jones told reporters.

“The matter is now being independently investigated by the homicide squad, and importantly being oversighted by the law enforcement conduct commission.”

Mr Jones said the incident unfolded after plain clothed police were patrolling near St Mary’s Hotel area and came across the man who was acting suspiciously.

Police spoke to the man, who then fled and was chased on foot to Acacia Avenue, about 10.30am on Wednesday.

The man leapt a fence into a rear yard and the two officers caught up with him, with a scuffle ensuing.

Police earlier said he reportedly threatened police.

Despite efforts of police and paramedics, the man died at the scene.

“Our hearts go out to the family, it’s always a very sad set of circumstances when these things happen,” Mr Jones said.

“A very sad set of circumstances at any time, particularly towards Christmas.”

One of the officers, a male senior constable, was treated at the scene after being bitten by a dog during the incident and received hospital treatment.

The other officer is receiving welfare support.

Mr Jones said both police involved were experienced.

He said it is very early in the investigation.

“Ultimately it is a matter for the coroner, so it is best I do not make any comment, other than to say it is a difficult set of circumstances, police were put into a very confronting situation, and they acted I understand in accordance with policy and procedure,” Mr Jones said.

Mr Jones said the matter will ultimately be determined by the coroner.

Police have urged the public to avoid the area.
