Two men charged after off-duty cop allegedly punched, kicked in head

There has been a major development in the investigation into an alleged attack that left an off-duty police officer seriously injured.

Two young men have been charged with violently assaulting two off-duty police officers in Sydney’s inner west, leaving one seriously injured.

The two off-duty constables were hospitalised after an alleged attack on Enmore Rd, Newtown at about 11pm on Wednesday.

NSW Police said on Thursday that the pair were walking up the road after attending a concert when they approached three men who were involved in an argument.

Police allege the two officers were then assaulted, with one knocked to the ground before being repeatedly punched and kicked in the head.

One constable, 25, was left unconscious on the road and an off-duty nurse performed CPR while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

The man suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

He remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Officers arrested two men - aged 18 and 20 - at a Mascot home at about 3.20pm on Thursday.

The 20-year-old man has since been charged with cause grievous bodily harm to person with intent and assault occasioning bodily harm in the company of others.

His 18-year-old co-accused was charged with two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm in company of others and larceny.

Both were refused bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on Friday.

NSW Police said early Friday morning that inquiries to locate the third man were ongoing.

The second off-duty cop, also aged 25, was taken to hospital with facial injuries but has since been released.

The officer who has been released from hospital was due to be interviewed late on Thursday.

Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald urged anyone with mobile phone, CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.

She said she had seen CCTV of the alleged incident that she described as “very confronting and distressing”.
